Wikapedia states that the massacre of Damour was a reprisal for the massacre in Katarina perpetrated by the Phalangists and in which twice as many people were killed than in Damour.

Katrina was a deadly hurricane that devastated the southern coast of the U.S. But, if you are referring to the Karantina massacre, it (along with the Black Saturday massacre) was in response to the killings of four members of the rightist Kataeb Party (Phalange/Maronite Christian) by the Lebanese National Movement (LNM), dominated by leftist Muslims and Palestinians who roamed Lebanon at the time with impunity and thought their murders would have no consequences. But, they did and the Palestinians paid a heavy price each time for their voracious and murderous conduct in every Arab country they trashed with their abominable presence.

Second, he was a president-elect, not President, because he was murdered before he even had time to govern.
Third, everybody knows that the Lebanese Civil War did not start with the "attack of the Maronites on the Palestinians" but, as its name indicates, it was a civil conflict between the Phalangists (a pro-western, Maronite (Catholic) Christian, rightist party created by Bashir's father, Pierre Gemayel) and many pan-Arabist and Left Wing groups which opposed a pro-western government. Because the Palestinians and the defeated PLO forces were chased from Jordan and found refuge in Lebanon, counting some 10% of the entire population, they joined the Lebanese pan-Arabist movement and the Leftist Wing groups (such as the Lebanese Communist Party (LCP), Communist Action Organization (COA) and pan-Syrian Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP)) and fought against the Phalangists. For that, and for selective murders of the Phalangist Lebanese, the Palestinians paid with being subject to successive massacres of their refugee camps (e.g. Sabra & Shatila).
Fourth, everybody also knows that Gemayel was killed by one of his own by the name of Habib Tanious Shartouni, who was a Maronite by background and upbringing, but who betrayed the Phalangists by affiliating with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. Basically, he was a Lebanese Judas to Gemayel and the Maronite Christians. He accused Gemayel of being a traitor to Lebanon and selling the country to Israel.
Under Gemayel, Lebanon had great chance of becoming a good neighbor to Israel and to prosper just like Israel did, in peace and safety. It was yet again the filthy Muslim and PLO ideology that destroyed Lebanon to a large degree and later allowed Syria and Hezbollah to run Lebanon.
